Most Wins at a Single Meeting - Oliver's Mount

Most wins at a single Oliver's Mount meeting

To win a race at Oliver’s Mount is something special, but to score multiple victories at a single meeting is an outstanding achievement. Syd Barnett set the ball rolling at the very first Scarborough races in September 1946, when the Coventry butcher scored a double in the 500cc Scratch and Invitation races aboard his 1939 girder-fork Norton springer.

Back in the 1940's, 50's and 60's there was less opportunity for riders to notch up multiple wins during a single weekend, due to there being only one race for each class of machinery, unlike today’s meetings which can have up to four legs for a single category. This makes Dickie Dale’s hat-trick of wins, at the July 1949 meeting all the more remarkable, when he took the 250cc race aboard a Moto Guzzi, the 350cc on a Velocette and 500cc riding a Norton.

John Cooper was the first rider to chalk-up four wins at a meeting during the September 1971 International, with victories in the 250cc, 350cc 500cc and 750cc Superbike categories, at the time the Derby-rider was the most successful Oliver's Mount competitor with a total of sixteen wins on the narrow, twisting circuit compared with Dan Shorey's fourteen.

Twenty-three-year-old, Carl Fogarty, literally swept the board at the September 1989 International Gold Cup, when he powered his 250 Honda to take the Phil Mellor Trophy and the two legs of the ‘Prince of the Roads’ (250cc-400cc) series, he also took both legs of the ‘King of the Roads’ (450cc–1000cc) series and the two legs of the Gold Cup Trophy aboard the Appleby Glade 750cc Honda RC30.' Foggy's' faultless display of riding took the Blackburn-rider to a total of seven race victories, four category wins and the outright circuit lap record, around the tight and twisty 2.4 mile parkland track.

All-rounder Ian Lougher recorded a colossal eight wins at the 2002 Cock o’ the North races. The Dromore-based Welshman demonstrated his ultra-versatility to the full, by taking both legs of the 125cc, 250cc and Superbike events, also the first leg of the 600cc class and the Cock o’ the North title race.

Ryan Farquhar does the 'impossible' with 18 wins at the 2009 Sheene Classic

Dungannon plant fitter, Ryan Farquhar, did what many people thought was the impossible during the May 2009 Barry Sheene Road Race Festival, when he took an unprecedented 18 wins from 18 starts, with 15 fastest laps and two class lap records.

None of the races were made easy for him, with Paul Coward driving him hard in the 350cc Classic events, Olie Linsdell pushing him to lap record pace in the Classic 500cc & Classic Superbike events and both Keith Pringle & Richard Gibson making him work for his wins in the Modern Supersport & Superbike events. In fact Farquhar’s total for the weekend could have been as high as 20 wins, if he hadn’t opted to sit out a couple of races to ease the ‘arm pump’ he’d been suffering.

His three Classic 350cc wins were taken on Roger Winfield’s 350 Honda K4, his seven Classic 500cc & Superbike wins on Roger Winfield’s exotic 500 Paton, the Italian twin valued at an estimated £70,000 and the remaining eight wins in the Modern Supersport & Superbike events all aboard his 600 KMR Kawasaki ZX6.

Farquhar's record-breaking spree, shot him up the Oliver’s Mount all-time winners list, into fourth pace, with 43 Scarborough wins.

Farquhar said afterwards: "I can't quite believe I've won 18 races this weekend but what a fantastic two days of racing !

It's been pretty tough through both qualifying and racing, as I've been out in practically every session and it's not easy to jump from one bike to another, particularly as they're all so different. Oliver's Mount is a physically demanding circuit and the Classic bikes are fairly hard work around here with all the vibrations and gear changes but I couldn't have hoped for a better weekend."

It's once again, worth noting that all 18 of these wins, are actual race victories and not qualifying/heat wins, will anyone ever beat that figure ?

Six-time multi-winning performances have all been achieved by Rob Orme, Alan Oversby and Guy Martin.

During the Gold Cup weekend in 1990, Orme took both legs of the 125cc National, both legs of the 125cc International and one leg each of the 250cc Phil Mellor Trophy and the International 250cc ‘Prince of the Roads’. Second places in the other two legs gave him a total of six individual race wins with overall victory in four separate categories.

Lancastrian classic bike rider, Oversby, recorded his six wins at the July 2004 Cock o’ the North races, taking both legs of the IHRO 350cc Classic, both legs of the IHRO 500cc Classic, the 350cc Classic Syd Barnett Trophy and 500cc Classic Denis Parkinson Trophy.

Lincolnshire’s Guy Martin has dominated the September Steve Henshaw Gold Cup meeting over the past few seasons, he stamped his authority on the 2004 Gold Cup meeting by winning the 250cc Lee Pullan Trophy, the 250cc Phil Mellor trophy, the first leg of the David Jefferies 600cc Trophy, both legs of the Superbikes and the Steve Henshaw Gold Cup Trophy.
