Tesseyman Trophy and Cock o' the North
Titles
Starting
in May 1947 a special award was made for the fastest ten laps in the 500cc events,
this was : "The Tesseyman Trophy", kindly
presented by Dennis Tesseyman a garage proprietor of
Scarborough, who also happened to be a lap scorer at the meeting and went on to
become the Chairman of the Road Race Committee.
The
title Cock o' the North was first awarded to the winner of the 500cc Final at Scarborough's July meeting in 1955. On that occasion,
John Surtees led home his "works" Norton team mates, John Hartle and Jack Brett. The title of Cock o' the North was
then used from 1955 to 1965 (reverted to the Tesseyman
Trophy between 1966 and 1972), and was re-introduced for the 1973 season and
continues to the present day.
Today
the popular 'July' Cock o' the North meeting is a weekend where there is something
to suit all tastes, as the racing programme Includes Classic bikes of all
shapes and sizes, Forgotten Era and Modern Day race-bikes.
Here are the
